The earthquake in Haiti was devastating. The Haitian government reported that an estimated 316,000 people had died; 300,000 had been injured; and 1,000,000 made homeless people. It destroyed large neighborhoods and many buildings. I briefly toured the area on my return to St. Louis.
There are still large tent cities near the airport and Port Au Prince is an awfully crowded. The population of the small island country of Haiti is nearly 10 million people.
Laura and the village of Bel Vie are actualy quite far from Port Au Prince, where the earthquake hit. It took me about 5-6 hours by car, ferry and truck to get to the middle of the Island of La Gonave where Bel Vie is situated.
